Caged Birds, Imprisoned Pigs; Enslaved
Human Beings: I just re-read Marjorie Spiegel’s
The Dreaded
Comparison: Human and Animal Slavery, about which Gordon Parks says
“[it] should be placed in schoolrooms across the universe.” In it
she asks us to look closely at the roots of human violence and
oppression and see how it has led to the devastation of nature, animals
and millions of human beings. I wanted to share a verse from a
poem she quotes in her book. It was written by Paul Dunbar, a son of
two runaway slaves.
I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore—
When he beats his bars and he would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core,
But a plea, that upward to heaven he flings—
I know why the caged bird sings!
This Week’s Prayer: With all caged
birds, pigs, cows, goats, fish, dolphins, orcas, elephants, tigers,
bile bears, those in labs and zoos and circuses, and all animals and
people oppressed and “caged” by human beings—WE FLING OUR PRAYERS
HEAVENWARD WITH YOU. We hear your cries; we hear your prayers
coming from deep in your hearts; we hear your pleas for freedom for
yourselves and for your loved ones. In Martin Luther King’s words we
drink from your cup of bitterness with you. We honor you; we love you;
and as our prayers ascend along with yours, we ask for strength and
right guidance to bring a final and lasting end to your
suffering. You are not alone, dear animals. We are
connected soul to soul, heart to heart, spirit to spirit with
you. And as we breathe deeply and close our eyes, we imagine all
your prayers and our prayers ascending out of the billions of
pain-filled cries. And as they ascend we see trillions of tiny bits of
light and love falling down upon the earth and awakening people
everywhere. We hold this vision for you of EMPTY CAGES and
freedom for all beings.
As always, with tears of gratitude, I send my thanks to each of you,
dear Prayer Circle members, for joining this circle of compassion and
shining the Light of Truth for all to see, so that one day soon, all
beings will live in peace together.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all beings
everywhere.
Thank you all for your devotion to truth, love, liberation and peace
for all beings.
With Love, peace, and gratitude from Judy Carman, and greetings from
Will, Madeleine, Tara and the Circle of Compassion team
