Reaching Out to Our Environmentalist
Friends: John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club once said
“Surely a better time must be drawing nigh when godlike beings will
become truly humane and learn to put their animal fellow mortals in
their hearts instead of on their backs or in their dinners.” I write a
column for the Kansas Sierra Club, entitled “Eating as Though the Earth
Matters.” My latest article, “From ‘Humane Washing’ to ‘Truly
Humane,’” is online at
kansas.sierraclub.org and on my blog at
peacetoallbeings.com. Gracia Fay Ellwood also addresses this in her
latest issue at
vegetarianfriends.net. My hope is that articles such as
these will reach the hearts of environmentalists who are not yet
vegan and help them return to their founder’s wise vision. With
their help, we could move so much more quickly to the end of the war
against animals and the earth. As we know, the two are so
desperately intertwined that there is no way to save the earth without
liberating animals and ending animal agriculture and exploitation once
and for all. Likewise, there can be no end to human wars as
long as we exploit animals. As Isaac Bashevis Singer stated: “As
long as people will shed the blood of innocent creatures there can be
no peace, no liberty, no harmony between people. Slaughter and justice
cannot dwell together.”
In my article, I ask environmentalist readers to consider that “humane
washing” is just as deceitful as “green washing.” Whole Foods,
for example, claims to have compassion for animals in its oxymoronic
attempt to convince buyers that the “humane” label resolves the
controversy over using and killing animals. As I point out to the
readers, “Regardless of whether an animal is raised in a factory farm
or by a neighbor in a green pasture, that individual animal has been
deprived of his or her right to live free and happy, to not be owned,
to not be used, and ultimately to not be barbarically transported to
slaughter and then mercilessly killed.”
Prayers for Opportunities and for
Enlightening to Strike: This week, may we see and seize
opportunities to shine the Light of Truth on animal oppression to all
our environmentalist brothers and sisters. May we find ways to
shine that Light for them so that it strikes with a sudden and
brilliant knowing. May we feel our kinship with them, for they
are activists too, with many of the same struggles we have. May
our common ground be blessed with unity and a laser sharp vision of the
future we can create together—a world in which human beings no longer
live by domination, but rather by love, respect, and freedom for all
living beings. May we walk together with them in harmony with the
Divine Mystery of the Universe. Love goes with us and embraces us
and all the animals. And because of that, we cannot
fail.
As always, with tears of gratitude, I send my thanks to each of you,
dear Prayer Circle members, for joining this circle of compassion and
shining the Light of Truth for all to see, so that one day soon, all
beings will live in peace together.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all beings
everywhere.
Thank you all for your devotion to truth, love, liberation and peace
for all beings.
With Love, peace, and gratitude from Judy Carman, and greetings from
